Amsterdamned Mixpack Profile by Kyle Kushman
Unwind and feel the delightful vibes of toking in Amsterdam coffee shops right at the comfort of home with Homegrown Cannabis Co.’s Amsterdamned mixpack. It features world-renowned strains such as White Widow, Power Plant, and Jack Herer. Not only are these strains famed for psychoactive and therapeutic effects but also marvelous horticultural properties.
White Widow - a cross between a Brazilian Sativa and South Indian Indica - is arguably the most popular of the three. Since making a debut, it has remained a staple in Dutch coffee shops. Named and famed for its thick coating of frosty trichomes, this strain offers the best of both worlds with an energetic zing nicely complemented by a mellow relaxation. Moreover, it is suitable for cultivators of all skill levels as it is so straightforward to grow.
With origins from a South African landrace, the Sativa-leaning Power Plant is solely and selectively inbred to maintain the integrity of its superior genetics. This strain is highly sought-after for immensely energizing, giggly, and almost trippy cerebral effects that heighten sociability. Thus, it makes for a perfect choice for a fun night out. Akin to White Widow, this strain is also incredibly easy to cultivate.
Lastly, there is Jack Herer - the first recognized medicinal strain to be distributed in Dutch pharmacies during the late 90s. With abundant levels of THC and CBD, this Sativa-dominant cross between Haze, Northern Lights #5, and Shiva Skunk became world-renowned not only for its recreational appeal but also for its therapeutic value. It is cherished for its energetic cerebral high coupled with the relaxing qualities of Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk.
Thanks to Homegrown Cannabis Co., just about any cultivator or connoisseur could delight in the Amsterdam experience. Combining these powerhouses in the Amsterdamned mixpack eliminates the need for choosing between the three. With it, cultivating or lighting up the trio simultaneously is a welcome possibility.
Growing Amsterdamned Mixpack
Cultivating the strains in the Amsterdamned mixpack is a no-sweat process. These easy-to-grow plants thrive well in any environment as long as it is warm, dry, and well-ventilated. Apart from that, the trio is also mostly resilient to pests, molds, and diseases.
White Widow is renowned for its enticing buds seemingly dusted with a thick coating of white powder that is - in actuality - milky, frosty trichomes. To further add to its appeal, its lush, green foliage has streaks of stunning purple hues. On top of that, it is also effortlessly easy to cultivate given its resistance against stressors such as molds, pests, mechanical damage, and cold temperature.
This strain grows into a bushy plant with heights ranging from 3 to 6 ft. Given its compact stature, cultivating it indoors would not be a problem. The choice of the substrate will also depend on the priorities as White Widow adapts well to both hydro and organic soil setups. The use of a hydroponics system will significantly boost the growth rate and productivity of the plant. On the other hand, choosing organic soil as the media will maximize its terpene and trichome production - thereby producing fatter, more resinous nugs. Additionally, it makes feeding easier because the inert soil serves as a buffer against severe pH fluctuations.
With regards to its nutrient requirements, providing an ample supply of nitrogen during the vegetative phase is essential for boosting the plant’s growth and vigor. After switching to 12/12 light cycle, flush the nitrogen out of the soil, and provide more phosphorus throughout the last weeks of flowering.
Given its bushy structure, White Widow is best subjected to the Screen of Green technique to coax its branches to grow laterally. To increase the airflow underneath the screen, pruning and trimming the excess foliage in the lower parts is necessary. Be careful not to overdo it though, as it could end up stressing and wounding the plant. With proper care, it rewards one with 450 to 500 grams of resinous buds per square meter (indoors) and about 550 to 600 grams of buds per plant (outdoors) by mid-October or after 8 to 9 weeks of flowering.
Power Plant is an unhybridized purebred that exhibits stable genetics as well as uniform and consistent growth - thereby making it ideal for cloning. Despite being an almost pure Sativa, this plant has a compact growth structure with minimal stretching and side-branching. It grows 3 to 5 ft tall and produces dense, resinous buds cradled in dark green, narrow and sharply serrated leaves. It has a low leaf-to-bud ratio, which makes it quite easy to take care of as pruning and trimming are seldom needed.
Another reason why it is easy to cultivate this illustrious strain is that it has high resistance to common stressors such as pests, molds, diseases, and inclement weather conditions. It thrives well in both indoor and outdoor settings. However, if a clandestine operation is a priority, it is best cultivated indoors as it is easier to contain its pungent smell in closed spaces with the use of air filtration systems such as carbon filters.
Much like White Widow, the Power Plant performs best when subjected to the Screen of Green method. Doing so significantly increases yields by exposing more bud sites to the light source. Occasional trimming of the branches underneath the screen would also be beneficial in improving the airflow in lower-lying portions.
Both hydro and organic soil would work well as a medium although soil tends to be better at maximizing terpene and trichome production, whereas hydro works best in inducing explosive growth and productivity. Regardless of which media gets chosen, Power Plant will inevitably produce satisfying yields in a short amount of time. After as little as 7 to 9 weeks of flowering, expect to harvest 500 grams of resinous per square meter (indoors) or 450 grams of dense nugs per plant (outdoors).
Cultivating Jack Herer takes moderate skills and knowledge in cannabis horticulture, although it is not impossible for beginners to successfully grow this strain.
Jack Herer has many phenotypes, but among the most common is the Indica-leaning type. This plant grows to be bushy but can still reach heights between 4 to 6 ft. As such, adequate vertical spacing must be provided when growing indoors. Topping and pruning the plant is also essential to keep its height in check.
This plant is moderately resistant to most cannabis maladies. As such, it can be grown in either indoor or outdoor setups. However, indoor cultivation is ideal as it provides better control over climatic conditions. Nevertheless, should the grower decide to rear it out in the open, it has to be ensured that the climate is warm and dry for the plant to thrive well.
Unlike the other two strains in the Amsterdamned mixpack, this cannabis variety thrives more when subjected to the Sea of Green technique coupled with the use of a hydroponics system. Such combination does not only significantly reduce the time spent in the vegetative phase, but it also boosts the growth rate and overall yields.
Apart from the fact that this plant is incredibly high-yielding, Jack Herer’s enormous buds are dense and resinous, so it tends to weigh down on the branches. As such, it is ideal to provide support mechanisms such as trellises to prevent the stems from snapping under the weight of the heavy buds. This plant takes its sweet time in flowering as it spends 8 to 10 weeks in the blooming phase, but the long wait is certainly worth it as it produces 400 to 500 grams per square meter (indoors) and 600 to 800 grams per plant.
Fragrance and Flavor
The trifecta in this mixpack offers a diverse selection of flavors and aroma, which would surely appeal to a wide range of preferences.
For one, White Widow exudes a sweet, musky aroma dominated by the fragrance of pines and cones. Flavor-wise, it zings the taste buds with a nice blend of sweet, herbal, and spicy flavors that leave a nutty aftertaste.
Power Plant, on the other hand, boasts pleasing notes of sandalwood and spice complemented by a sharp, herbal, and peppery taste.
Lastly, Jack Herer excites the senses with a pungent and tropical scent with blended notes of lemon and pine at the forefront. It also tickles the taste buds with the flavor of crushed peppers that leaves a sweet and spicy aftertaste.
All three strains in this mixpack feature an upbeat cerebral high that encourages creativity and sociability. Meanwhile, White Widow and Jack Herer also exert after-effects of blissful relaxation that balances out the initial head rush. Such effects make the Amsterdamned mixpack ideal for those who like to wake and bake, or for those who need a boost on late afternoons where a smooth transition from stimulation to relaxation may come in handy as the day ends.
Those seeking a well-balanced experience that is simultaneously stimulating and soothing will undoubtedly savor every hit from White Widow. This pick-me-up strain induces a fast-acting and heavy-hitting euphoria that uplifts the mood and spirit with its powerful bursts of energy. On top of that, it also inspires creativity and giddiness that makes introverted people more sociable and talkative.
After a while though, this initial stimulation settles into a profound relaxation that melts away stress and fatigue. From the temples down to every limb, this relaxation releases tensions from tired muscles. Thus, White Widow is the perfect choice for late afternoon strain snacking as it will give a burst of energy to fuel last minute accomplishment of final tasks for the day. Afterward, it transitions the body to wind down into a blissful relaxation after a tiring day. The best thing about it is that such relaxing effects are not too overbearing nor couch-locking provided that it is appropriately dosed.
Navigating social settings could be anxiety-inducing and challenging for some, especially to introverts. But with the aid of Power Plant’s invigorating and euphoria-inducing effects, its user could effortlessly cruise through any social situation. This strain is known for uplifting the mood and framing the mind to be relaxed, happy, creative, and talkative, which works wonders in facilitating interesting conversations. It also induces a potent head rush with little to no physical fatigue, although it can mildly muddle thoughts. However, caution must be practiced when dosing as it tends to teeter on the verge of intoxicating, especially to those with lower THC tolerance.
Interestingly, Jack Herer offers the best of both worlds with its well-balanced effects that induce heightened sociability. It starts with an immediate head-clearing buzz that effectively unlocks creativity and focus. Such effects are most useful for accomplishing pending tasks with ease all while having fun.
This strain also uplifts the mood and inspires an upbeat feeling, which makes its users more inclined to socialize. Much like Power Plant, it could facilitate interesting conversations that could be downright deep and philosophical.
Akin to White Widow, Jack Herer also exerts a relaxing after-effect that wraps the limbs in just the right amount of heaviness. Depending on the intensity of the dosage, it is usually not couch locking. Instead, it only slows down physical activities and urges the muscles to relax and release stress.
Be careful not to overindulge in it though, because this strain could cause a trippy high that induces sensory and auditory distortions along with a crippling sensation of profound sedation.
Part of the appeal of the Amsterdamned mixpack is that aside from its leisurely effects, it also offers medicinal benefits that are just as potent as its recreational effects. This trio - especially Jack Herer which is predominantly used as a medical strain - offers fast-acting and long-lasting relief from physical and psychological ailments alike.
With sky-high THC levels ranging from 18% to 25%, the stains in this mixpack must be consumed with caution. Otherwise, overindulgence could cause unpleasant side effects such as paranoia, aggravated anxiety, lightheadedness, and in some cases, uncomfortable hallucinations. In addition, some inevitable mild discomfort such as dry mouth and eyes may accompany the experience regardless of the dosage. Nonetheless, it could be easily remedied by drinking lots of fluids.
