Is it Legal to Buy and Grow Cannabis Seeds in New York?

Is weed legal in New York? Until recently, the answer was a resounding “no.” In New York, weed is legal thanks to a recent change in legislation.

Buying marijuana seeds has always been another matter entirely. Since cannabis seeds contain no THC until you grow plants from them, it has always been legal to purchase them.

Thanks to New York marijuana laws, you can now do far more than buy weed seeds. You can also grow your own.

As with most legislation, there are a few requirements if you wish to stay within the law.

  1. You must be over 21 years old to smoke weed legally.
  2. On your person, you may have no more than three ounces of cannabis.
  3. At home, you may store up to five pounds of marijuana, as long as it’s in a safe place.

The laws for smoking marijuana are similar to those for tobacco. You may only puff away within designated smoking areas or other places where lighting up is legal.

Is it Better to Grow Indoors or Outdoors?

This question is the marijuana grower’s version of the chicken or the egg. Each option has advantages and disadvantages, which we’ll discuss below.

Climate conditions

New York sometimes has remarkably stable weather conditions. At other times, this state has a reputation for being exceptionally unpredictable.

The coldest months are January, February, and March. While snow isn’t a firm expectation from residents of this state, it isn’t unheard of either. If you plan on growing your new feminized seeds outdoors, you probably want to avoid the first quarter of the year.

Spring (April to June) and Fall (October to November) are mild seasons and ideal for growing cannabis seeds that prefer a more temperate climate. The former is also an excellent time of year to start the heat-loving varieties you want to grow into the summer.

If you decide to grow outdoors during summer, be sure to choose varieties with a short harvesting season. Failure to do this can result in the first frost killing off your precious weed plants.

It’s worth noting that this state gets at least eight days of rain every month that it doesn’t snow. For growing outdoors, you might want to avoid strains that are prone to mold or fungal diseases.

Before planting, look for any areas in your garden that are in a rainshadow but get adequate sun. Those are ideal planting locations for sun-loving marijuana plants that deal poorly with wet leaves.

Indoor growing

If you genuinely want to cultivate your weed seeds well, you might want to consider indoor growing. New York has a relatively mild climate, but it also happens to be unpredictable and often wet.

With indoor cultivating, nothing can stop you. You have complete control over temperature, humidity, and how much nutrients your plants get. If you have space, we recommend setting up an indoor grow room.

Best strains to grow in New York

Many different strains might do well in a milder state like New York. Some of the most popular varieties in this area include OG Kush Feminized seeds and Lavender Feminized seeds. If you want something spicy, Blue Dream Feminized seeds are another firm favorite.

Assuming you’re growing indoors, the control is all yours. Outdoors, the sky’s the limit, but mostly because rain is common.

For an outdoor grow, you may want to consider a hardier variety like White Widow Autoflower seeds. These types of cannabis can handle those spontaneous spells of rain for which New York is renowned.
