Grandaddy Purple (GDP) is cannabis royalty. Stunning, luxurious colors that spark creativity and fire the imagination, almost as much as the high! Grand Daddy Purps is a notoriously potent cannabis strain, capable of melting away stress and shining a euphoric light through even the thickest of glooms. This strain isn’t just for recreational users, though, it’s also one of the best high-THC medicinal marijuana strains IN THE WORLD.
But where did Grandaddy Purple come from? Who created it? And why has it grown into such a global superstar?
Grandaddy Purps: Royal Indica
Grand Daddy Purple was released in California in the early 2000s, to much global fanfare. Its creator, Ken Estes, developed it primarily as a way to relieve pain and cure insomnia, but its medicinal properties are only part of the story. It looks, tastes and smells amazing! Its parent strains are Big Bud and Purple Urkle, so it’s easy to see where the big yields and striking colors come from. A successful grow can produce around 17 ounces per 3 sq/ft of extremely attractive flower. Eye-catching purples and deep, verdant greens snaked with red and amber… tightly packed under a blanket of sugary trichomes. Grandaddy Purple is a connoisseur’s dream.

What are the effects of Granddaddy Purple?
Grandaddy Purple Feminized is not a pure Indica and this is nowhere more evident than in the high. Its potent sativa side means the psychoactive effects are just as cerebral as they are physical. Its high concentration of THC delivers a rapid euphoric buzz that kicks in within minutes of smoking or vaping the dried herb. It’s upbeat, positive and the sense of happiness sticks around as the high gets physical.
About half an hour in, you’ll feel gentle waves of soothing sensations, intensifying inside the muscles and relaxing from head to toe. One or two bowls is great for chilling with close friends and playing games. A heavier dose will wrap you up in heavy blanket and talk you gently to sleep. Insomnia? What insomnia?
Does granddaddy purple have CBD?
With a low CBD content, the medicinal qualities of GDP are often overlooked. This is despite Grandaddy Purple being one of the most sought-after high-THC medical marijuana strains around.
GDP promotes the release of happy hormones, delivering feelings of joy, euphoria, and, towards the end of the high, uber-contented bliss. It’s extremely popular with those battling anxiety and depression.
Her indica genes mean she’s a natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory, great for easing muscle tensions and relieving pain. These qualities are boosted by the presence of pinene and caryophyllene, working with THC to reduce inflammation and alleviate muscle spasms.
For patients with illnesses like multiple sclerosis and cancer, GDP can provide relief from the side-effects of normal treatments, like chemotherapy. The analgesic qualities of GDP make her a natural, safer alternative to addictive, opioid-based painkillers.
What does Grand Daddy Purple smell like?
Grandaddy Purple Feminized is famous for its delicious aroma of sugared fruit and crushed grape, but the nose is far more complex than most reports suggest, especially in the bowl. As you run the dense nugs through excited fingers, you’ll get notes of bitter musk and citrus, but nothing compared to the dominant fusion of dark berries and red grape. This aroma takes on a peppery seasoning in the grinder, as the caryophyllene starts to bring all the nasal elements together. Blaze this baby up and things really get interesting. The fresh fruit of the cured flower now smells baked and caramelized, with flaky notes of dried herbs floating like cinders around the nostrils. This is an aroma to relish, to savor, to luxuriate in.
What does granddaddy purple taste like?
The luxuriant aromas of Grandaddy Purple advertise the flavors really well, with the journey from fresh fruit to baked berries plotting a similar course. We highly recommend a few water crackers before you hit the bowl, with a glass of cool, still water. This should cleanse the palate and leave a blank canvas for the rich tapestry of flavors you’re about experience. Of course, this will be heavily reliant on the quality of the GDP in your bowl, but if it’s well-grown and well-cured, you’re in for a genuine, unforgettable treat.
Is Grand Daddy Purple easy to grow?
Grandaddy Purp is the product of meticulous planning and constant refinement. Even if you’re a beginner, you’ve a great chance at a successful, high-yielding grow.
You can grow Grandaddy P hydroponically or in containers with a soilless mix. Being a compact plant with dense foliage, it will need regular pruning throughout the vegetative period. Keep the lower branches relatively clear until the first two weeks of flowering. This will reduce the odds of mold and mildew by allowing a good flow of air around the stems. With GDP, it’s vital you maintain proper humidity levels. From 65 – 70% relative humidity (RH) during the seedling stage, to 50 – 70% during the vegging phase. The temperature during this period should stay between 65 – 75°F. Once you flip into flower, adjust to 40 – 50% RH and 55 – 65°F.
During the last two weeks of flowering, the humidity level should be dropped to 30 – 40% RH to guard against mold.
As you gain experience, you can start employing some advanced, low-stress training (LST) techniques. GDP thrives in a Screen of Green (ScrOG). This simple training technique involves manipulating the branches so that most bud sites are located on the upper canopy, evenly distributed. Not only does this boost the yield, but it also results in consistent quality across all the flowers.
