In 1985, Jack “The Emperor of Hemp” Herer released The Emperor Wears No Clothes, cited by many as starting the cannabis revolution. Having spent three decades in print (it’s now on its 12th edition), it is the lasting legacy of the American author and cannabis activist people rightly call a hero.

“There is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world’s paper and textiles; meet all of the world’s transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time… And that substance is – the same one that did it all before – Cannabis Hemp… Marijuana!”

– Jack Herer

Jack Herer: the champagne of cannabis cultivars

Jack Herer is a Dutch creation, a unique cross of Northern Lights #5, Haze and Shiva Skunk. It hit the market in the mid-90s and soon became famous for its energizing, uplifting high and numerous medicinal applications.

Jack Herer is essentially a Hazy strain, genetically remodeled to grow like an Indica. It’s compact and very hardy, showing excellent pest and disease resistance. It delivers great yields and the flavors are nothing short of fantastic.

A good way of judging a great strain is to look at the number of crosses and hybrids it has spawned: Jack Herer is ‘father’ to hundreds. It has a unique chemotype that makes it hugely desirable to breeders, and is one of the rare strains to possess an abundance of terpinolene. This terpene, also found in lilac and nutmeg, is responsible for fresh, herbal flavors and is said to have amazing anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Jack Herer has won multiple Cannabis Cup awards and continues to spawn interesting, award-winning offspring (see below).

What are the effects of Jack Herer?

Jack Herer’s strong Sativa kick delivers happiness like you wouldn’t believe. It’s rare to feel such euphoric power while remaining focused and clear-headed. This is bliss with a bounce, joy that jives and jitterbugs.

Jack Herer, at least at the outset, is like a cannabis-infused energy drink. Don’t be surprised to find yourself dancing round the house, building a fort out of furniture or suddenly feeling like a work-out. The buzz is vibrant and quick-hitting. Once your initial, energetic rush begins to fade, it’s replaced with an extremely mellow and very relaxing high. Too much will definitely give you couch-lock but keep it moderate and you’re in for a fantastic night.

It delivers the very best of both indica and sativa highs: energetic enough to be social, calming enough to hit before bed. It’s a great one to share and parties are simply not the same without an ounce or two of Jack.

Does Jack Herer have CBD?

While Jack Herer isn’t famous for being a high-CBD cannabis strain, it’s medicinal properties are very well-recognized. The euphoric effects mentioned above translate to a fantastic, stress-busting marijuana strain. The blissful energy leaves little room for depression and, while it’s clear to see how this could be useful short-term, there is great potential for Jack Herer as a long-term treatment for depression. As always, the research needs to be done before the full potential can be realized.

As far as physical aches and pains go, the terpinolene-heavy terpene profile can deliver relief from inflammation and pain. So while the high is delivering a welcome energy boost, the terps will help keep you from pulling a muscle or feeling a cramp.

As with most potent cannabis strains, Jack Herer can cause adverse reactions. Dry mouth and eyes are common side effects, as is dehydration. Make sure you keep topped up with water and/or low-sugar seltzers. This is not the sort of medicinal marijuana you want to take if you aren’t used to powerful, psychotropic effects. Those who want a mild high should check out our high-CBD strains, or use Jack Herer in extreme moderation.

What does Jack Herer smell like?

There are few greater pleasures than popping open a jar of Jack. Its spicy, pine-like scent really catches the nostrils, especially after a decent cure. Good Jack Herer is one of those strains you simply cannot put down. Open the jar for a sniff. Put the jar back in the closet. Leave the room. Go back to the closet. Open the jar for a sniff. Put the jar back in the closet. Hesitate. Open the closet… you get the picture – it really is THAT good.

What does Jack Herer taste like?

Once you’ve packed a bowl (and taken a few more deep, appreciative sniffs) and blazed her up, the spicy pine takes on a real fruity sweetness. You will taste baked orange rind, molasses and hints of tamarind, and the taste will last for hours, too. Everything you eat for the rest of the day will have little hits of Jack Herer, reminding you of that jar in the closet, tingling your lips as you open the door, again.

Is Jack Herer easy to grow?

A well-grown Jack Herer will always produce high yields, up to around 17 ounces per 3 sq/ft. It does this with a short flowering time while showing very good resistance to mold, mildew and disease. Is it easy to grow? Well, you wouldn’t pick this for your very first grow… there are plenty of far easier novice cannabis strains available for that. But you won’t need to much experience.

The main concern will be managing the height and stretch. Jack Herer can finish over 6-foot tall so you’ll need to calculate exactly when to flip into flower so you don’t have a plant outgrowing the tent.

Indoors, Jacky Herer grows well in hydro, soil or coco. Its rapid growth makes it an ideal candidate for a (Screen of Green SCROG) set-up, but it’s generally happy anywhere, including the greenhouse.

Keep it well-fed, don’t let it grow too close to the lights (you absolutely have to be vigilant here) and maintain a temp of 70 to 80 degrees. While in flower (it should mature in 8 to 10 weeks) it will most likely develop an enormous, central cola. Keep an eye on it and give it extra support if necessary.

Outdoors, Jack Herer loves a warm med-style environment. If you can raise a Jack in full, Californian or Mediterranean sun, you’re one hell of a lucky grower. Sun-grown Jack Herer not only tastes AMAZING, the yields are far bigger and stickier than a standard, indoor grow.

How do you say Jack Herer?

We know what you’re thinking. Never mind the great flavors, forget about the stunning high and the medical miracles… all you want to know is how to pronounce Herer, right? Okay, we have it on very good authority that it’s pronounced huh-RARE … with the emphasis on the elongated raaaare. So next time this comes up in debate or someone tries to correct you, show them this article and it’ll soon put them right.

Jack Herer: the legacy

As we have said many times, you can measure a high-quality cannabis strain by the number of crosses and hybrids created with its genetics. We have created lots of Jack Herer hybrids but this lot are our favourites.

Jack Herer Autoflower

  • Genotype: 50% Sativa; 20% Indica; 30% Ruderalis
  • THC: 16%
  • Growth Cycle: 8-10 weeks from seeds to harvest
  • Yield: 400 gr/sqm; 150 gr/plant

At around 16% THC, the effects are not as intense as those grown from photoperiod, female seeds. This makes it way more suitable for newbies in cannabis consumption and those with low THC tolerance. As for home cultivation, Jack Herer Autoflower can reach maturity after only 8 to 10 weeks from germination, yielding up to 14 ounces per 3 sq/ft.

CBD Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

  • Genotype: Hybrid
  • THC: 5.5% CBD: 7.5%
  • Flowering Time: 7-9 weeks; Early October
  • Yield: 400 gr/sqm; 150 gr/plant

Not everyone can tolerate the intense psychoactive effects of cannabis. As well as the standard, feminized cannabis strains, Homegrown Cannabis Co. also stocks CBD Jack Herer Feminized. This strain delivers a gentle, euphoric, user-friendly buzz. The low level of THC and high CBD level opens the door to numerous therapeutic benefits, all without the danger of an overwhelming high.

  • Genotype: 70% Sativa; 30% Indica
  • THC: 19-25%
  • Flowering Time: 7-9 weeks; Late September
  • Yield: 350-400 gr/sqm; 500 gr/plant

In this cross, two legends collide to deliver an unparalleled energizing, euphoric high. Jack Herer x Skunk Feminized female seeds boast over 20% THC, a punchy and pugnacious powerhouse. Intermediate growers should be able to bang out yields of 14 ounces per 3 sq/ft.

Jack Herer x Super Skunk Feminized

  • Genotype: 55% Sativa; 45% Indica
  • THC: 15-22%
  • Flowering Time: 8-10 weeks; Late October
  • Yield: 400-500 gr/sqm; 500 gr/plant

One of the objectives of this hybrid was to enhance the growth traits, making it friendly to beginners. Jack Herer x Super Skunk Feminized retains the quick onset and intense euphoric cerebral high of straight Jack, but with a more forgiving grow. This strain responds well to ScrOG and can yield up to 17 ounces per sq/ft under 600 watt HPS.

Girl Scout Cookies x Jack Herer Feminized Seeds

  • Genotype: 45% Sativa; 55% Indica
  • THC: 23-28%
  • Flowering Time: 8-10 weeks; Mid to late October
  • Yield: 600 gr/sqm; 500 gr/plant

Feminized Girl Scout Cookies x Jack Herer is one of the most exciting crosses in recent years, and one hugely popular in our office. We like to think of her as the marriage of an American legend to a European classic. After only 8 to 10 weeks flowering, it can yield an impressive 21 ounces per sq/ft, with a whopping 28% THC. And just wait until you taste those Jack and Cookies flavors – they’re unbelievable!
