Cheese is a unique herb in every sense of the word. Its cheesy and musky ‘old socks’ stink continues to win the hearts of dank weed lovers. Thanks to its exquisite flavor and soothing touch, countless cannabis fans have made it their go-to after work strain since the late 80s.

The original cheese variety sprung from the legendary Skunk #1 - a phenotype completely unlike anything that came before it. It boasted a cheddar cheese fragrance and was able to produce massive yields of giant buds. In order to stabilize these winning traits, the first variant was crossed with Afghani. This union introduced the Cheese plant that pot growers and smokers know and love today.

Leading tokers into a state of calm and euphoria, this variety is said to have medical benefits, too. It became a big name in dispensaries due to its strong reputation in the medical cannabis sphere. Easing both the mind and body, its potency helps ensure quick, long-lasting results. 

Growing Cheese from Feminized Seeds

Cheese proudly showcases its hybrid genetics in both appearance and structure. Standing taller than most Indica strains, it can reach over 8 feet in an optimal outdoor setting. In some cases, its leaves lean more towards the Sativa side, growing long and slender instead of short and fan-shaped.

A plant displaying both Indica and Sativa genetics can have significant advantages. In Cheese's case, its long yet sturdy branches can support its large colas with no issues. That means growers won't need to install any support, even though it flowers abundantly. Because it's so tall, there’s more room for nugs to develop. All these traits pave the way for an easy and rewarding growing adventure.

Best grown in a controlled setting, Cheese thrives in soil coupled with a ScrOG setup. During flowering, which lasts for 8 to 9 weeks, the grow room must have a temperature of around 64 to 79°F and humidity levels of 40–50%. If raised in optimal conditions, growers can harvest up to 1.8 ounces of pungent buds per square foot.

Of course, the plant prefers the real sun over an artificial light source. Cheese prospers best in places with warm, Mediterranean-like conditions. Its long, graceful limbs dance in the breeze and its foliage revels in the sun’s warm rays. Come harvest time, cultivators can dry and cure more than 21 ounces of dank bud per plant. It’s also possible to get big yields during summer in the northern hemisphere. To make sure no frost or chilly weather can harm the crop, gardeners should harvest no later than mid-October.

Fragrance and Flavor

Cheese takes some getting used to. Its fragrance is unusual and can be quite overpowering at first. As the plant flowers, its dank musk becomes even more pungent. Once lit, though, it reveals a pleasant earthiness with hints of sweet herbs. It's a bit like smelling milky tea mixed with cheese in a musty old sock, all while slumped on a mossy forest floor.

Having smelled it, the flavor comes as no surprise. It tastes precisely as expected and is definitely an acquired taste. Tokers will certainly make out the prominent notes of cured cheese first. Hints of skunk, cream, butter and sandalwood follow soon after.


Perfect for a late afternoon or early evening smoke out, de-stressing exhausted souls is Cheese's forte.
