Diesel strains have a fascinating history - and a confusing one too. To be clear, Sour Diesel started this family. However, the prominence of another hybrid - NYC Diesel - can be confusing. Not to mention, the particular variety that has grown quite a following is not even related.

Sour Diesel, on paper, does possess a high concentration of THC. Incredibly, the intensity of its effects suggests it could be more than as indicated. The reason for that is the complexities involved in its terpene profile. Some strains, for example, emit a lemony scent and is, without a doubt, due to the abundance of limonene.

In the case of Sour Diesel, no single terpene is responsible for the diesel-like smell. Instead, it is the combination of the following:

  • limonene
  • caryophyllene
  • myrcene
  • linalool
  • pinene

Each of these terpenes exudes a distinct aroma. More importantly, each one also provides its health benefits. Together, these compounds synergize cannabinoids, thus increasing its potency and efficacy.

The Story of Sour Diesel

It started in 1991 during a Grateful Dead concert. A young breeder who goes by Chemdog obtained a bag of weed called Dog Bud. Impressed by its quality, he exchanged contact information and later arranged to have two more bags sent to him.

In the second bag, Chemdog found 13 pieces of seeds. He germinated and cultivated four. Unfortunately, one was a male that he discarded. The remaining three, on the other hand, he labeled it as:

  • Chemdog (better known today as '91 Chemdog)
  • Chemdog A (more popularly called Chemdog's Sister)
  • Chemdog B

Ten years later, Chemdog germinated three more seeds. Only two sprouted; one was subpar, but the other one labeled Chemdog D (more commonly called Chem D today) proved to be stellar.

Of the phenotypes, Chemdog '91 is the most successful - and insanely potent too. At one time, in 2016, it entered the 2015 Cannabis Cup held in Colorado, coming in with 32.13% THC, the first time that a strain breached the 30% mark.

Its most significant contribution, though, is not the outstanding THC level. As fate would have it, a Massachusetts Super Skunk found its way to a crop of Chemdog '91, causing accidental pollination. It gave birth to a strain that came to be called NYC Diesel and East Coast Sour Diesel (ECSD).

During those years, it became the rage in New York, and very expensive too, selling for $50 per gram. Perhaps it is for that reason that another breeder copied it by crossing a Mexican and an Afghani, calling it by the same name - NYC Diesel.

Over the years, the original NYC Diesel came to be called Sour Diesel. On the other hand, the non-related hybrid stuck to its name and has since gained a wide following as well.

Growing Sour Diesel at Home

The effects of Sour Diesel, to say the least, is incredibly energizing. More than anything, the euphoric buzz swarming into the mind, and the body can only uplift the mood, instilling a sense of happiness. Moreover, it could also serve as an aphrodisiac or as a means to alleviate stress, pain, anxiety, and depression. For that to happen - attaining its full potential - it is best grown using seeds obtained from Homegrown Cannabis Co.

Sour Diesel is available as either feminized or auto-flowering seeds.

Sour Diesel Strains

Many have tried, but none could recreate the fantastic traits of Sour Diesel. On the other hand, it has lent its genetics to numerous breeding projects. Among the most popular ones are these four outstanding hybrids:

Lemon Tree

In Lemon Tree, Sour Diesel goes back to its roots - sort of, at least. It is a cross with Lemon Skunk - an offspring of two Skunk phenotypes that exuded a strong citrusy, lemony scent. Thus, besides the fragrance, the union also altered the genotype to be balanced. As a result, the effects delivered is a perfect blend of cerebral and physical stimulation.

Growing this strain is a delight to the senses. From germinating feminized Lemon Tree seeds to nurturing it throughout the growth stages, it does not require advanced techniques. Once this beginner-friendly plant starts to bloom, it exudes a sour lemony scent mixed with skunky, diesel-like notes. It takes only 7 to 9 weeks to complete the flowering period, after which the yield could reach 500 grams per square meter.

A correctly cured Lemon Tree can provide a sublime experience. First, it takes you to a soaring high, sending a euphoric rush into the head. Then, it gradually complements the mental stimulation by spreading a soothing sensation all over the body. For medical patients, it is excellent at providing a reprieve from stress, inflammations, and pains.

Oregon Underdawg

Oregon is one of the more liberal states in the United States when it comes to the use of cannabis. It is not surprising, therefore, that a remarkable strain should emerge. Oregon Underdawg is a three-way cross between three legends - Oregon Afghani, OG Kush, and Sour Diesel. Based on the reputations of the cultivars, the logical conclusion is that the progeny would offer a sublime experience. And, it does so with flying colors.

Beyond recreational use, this strain is also capable of providing a reprieve. It does not only brighten the mood while inducing full-bodied relaxation. More importantly, it alleviates stress, depression, and chronic pains.

Oregon Underdawg is versatile in that it thrives indoors and outdoors. Due to deep Afghani roots, this strain is incredibly resilient and has excellent resistance to diseases and pests - traits honed by adaptation to harsh conditions in the Hindu Kush. Homegrown Cannabis Co. also perfected the production of feminized seeds and could thus ensure not only quick germination but also high success rates.

It takes 8 to 9 weeks for the flowers to develop fully, loaded with 22-25% THC. During harvest, it yields 400-450 grams per square meter under 600-watts HPS or LED.

Sour Kush

Add an Afghani from Oregon, and this cross might have been a near duplicate of Underdawg. However, that is not the case. At any rate, this union of Sour Diesel and OG Kush birthed a hybrid with enhanced cerebral effects to go along with the signature world-class full-bodied high of OG line.

When used in moderation, it induces an uplifting, euphoric high. A relaxing body buzz later complements the cerebral stimulation. Medically, it continues the tradition of Sour Diesel and OG Kush - both being formidable stress-relievers. Moreover, it can also mitigate anxiousness and depressive symptoms, as well as chronic pains.

Relishing the fantastic benefits of Sour Kush starts with obtaining its feminized seeds. For indoor cultivation, the quality and yields could be enhanced by employing the Sea of Green or Screen of Green technique. After 8-10 weeks flowering, expect to harvest between 450-500 grams per square meter. Outdoors, on the other hand, it is capable of producing a stellar 800 grams per plant.

Note: Sour Kush is not the same hybrid as another strain called Sour Diesel x OG Kush, available as feminized seeds.

Sour Skies

Sour Skies is an evenly split hybrid that combines the energizing buzz of Sour Diesel and the relaxing effects of Skywalker OG. At 17-24% THC, the experience is quite intense and for sure sublime - as long as the dosage is not excessive.

Its distribution, to date, is mostly limited to California. However, that has since changed since Homegrown Cannabis Co. made Sour Skies feminized seeds available. After germinating, the seedlings grow into medium-sized plants that should not be an issue for indoor cultivation. Its foliage can be dense and thus need regular pruning and trimming.

After triggering the flowering phase, it flowers for 9 to 11 weeks. Under the Screen of Green and 600-watts HPS/LED lamp, it yields 400-500 grams per square meter. Outdoors, it reaches 180 cm, with each plant producing a generous 500-700 grams of resin-packed buds.
